In a study published in 2022, researchers tested the effects of aromatherapy using Citrus aurantium(Bitter Orange) on sleep disorders in postmenopausal women.
Participants placed the oil dilution on one forearm 2 times a day and with their arm close to their face inhaled the aroma for 5 minutes, 4 consecutive days a week for 4 weeks.
The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluate the effect of the treatment in the test group vs the control group at the beginning of the study and again after 4 weeks of treatment.
Researchers found that the PSQI scores from the baseline to after 4 weeks of treatment dropped from 12.08 to 5.75.
They concluded that Citrus aurantiumaromatherpy could significantly improve sleep quality and reduce sleep disorders in postmenopausal women.
